The British band The 1975 have been banned from performing in Malaysia after frontman Matt Healy kissed his bass player, Ross MacDonald, on stage in protest of the country's anti-LGBTQ laws.
The incident occurred during the band's performance at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. After Healy delivered a profanity-laced rant against the Malaysian government, he walked over to MacDonald and kissed him on the lips. The band then ended their set early and were escorted off the stage.
The Malaysian government has since banned The 1975 from performing in the country again. The ban has been met with criticism from human rights groups, who have accused the government of censorship and discrimination.
Healy has defended his actions, saying that he wanted to use his platform to speak out against the Malaysian government's treatment of LGBTQ people. "I don't see the f—— point … of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with," he said during the show.
The incident has sparked a debate about the rights of LGBTQ people in Malaysia. The country's Penal Code criminalizes same-sex sexual activity, and there is no law prohibiting discrimination against LGBTQ people.
